In a few weeks Tripwire will release RO:2 on Steam, I have my copy pre-ordered and I think I will be playing quite a lot of this before BF:3 comes out in October!

Having watched The Cynical Brit Ro2 interview, I've preordered it, even after saying I was going to wait. It doesn't look the most beautiful of games but the gameplay/modes looks interesting. And hopefully the beta will be released next week. Plus I got 20% off ;D ;D ;D

I know that if it wasn't for BF3 coming out in a few months we would be looking at this seriously as game as a for the clan. A lot will depend on how it plays. The original RO was a little quirky, much like ArmA it's an acquired taste. This version is supposed to be more approachable.
It is defiantly "hard core" game.
We shall see, if BF3 is anything less than we hope for or goes off the boil after a few months like Bad Company 2 did. We could have another look at RO:2 as it's going to be around for a long time.
Bad Company 2 is still a good game and was much improved by Vietnam but I don't know anyone that plays it.

First impressions for playing the Beta:
No one is going to get this game for the looks, it's all about the game play. Not that it looks nasty or anything but it's not a pretty game. Not in the way Battlefield makes you go wow or ArmA makes you stop to look at the sunset.
What it's about is the game play, proper old school First Person Shooter. It's hard core, Oh boy is it hard core! You not going to be running about spray and pray in this one.
We all played MoH, we know where WWII fps games came from. Every game since then has added something. These additions have changed the way the games are played. CoD has taken it's path, lots of extras. Toy's, perks, crazy extras. RO:2 has taken a different path, it has added team work, ranks and a Honour system. It adds to the depth of game play.
At first you could be playing a regular WWII fps game. You have a rifle, pistol and a couple of nades. You quickly discover it's hardcore so you keep your head down. Then you see there there are squads, with a squad leader. There is someone in command, there is teamwork!
Some of the maps are CoD size and others are Battlefield size! There are Tank maps! I have not played and tank games yet, but that's a whole new world!

I have had my first go at the tank game. Not sure how much of that I will be playing It's like being sat in a Royal Mail letter box, and it moves about as fast! Have not got one single idea WTF is going on! I may need to practise some more if I'm going to go tanking!

That vid reminds me so much of MoH. I can't remember which version but that map was so similar to the one in the bombed town with the church. Jedi would love this game!

Gaddo play some at my house before we drove to Hue's. He said it reminded him of MoH too. When I'm just looking to play a game to just fill some time I play Day of Defeat. I like it cos it's real simple, WWII rifle and a couple of nades. There are no exploding dogs or Semtex packed RC cars. Just you and the other guy and your ability to shoot straight.
Well RO2 is just like that, better objectives, some squad stuff thrown in to keep it fresh. But at it's most basic, you and your weapon with a whole load of other guys doing the same.

There has been a patch or two in the last few days. Firstly the graphics now look really nice. The whole game runs a lot more smoothly. Also I had my first game with bots on the map. This looks to be an amazing feature. Your server is always full! As more people join the number of bots reduce. Also if you are playing one of the game types without re-spawn if you die you will re-spawn in the body of a bot. So you get the intensity of single life play without all the sitting around The good thing for us would be that if there were only a few playing there would still be a full server, much more fun

Finally it's here and I can play. Just in time for bed Grump! Anyhow please ignore any of my early statements about this game looking ugly. Now it's out of beta it's look chuffing marvellous.
There is the normal weapon handling/assault coarse you get at the beginning of a shooter game. Well I wish they had included it in the beta. I have already seen things in that short first section of the single player that I wish I had known about while playing the Beta.
Just running through that you can see that there is some depth to the game most do not include. There is the whole cover system, blind firing. Breath control, setting range on your sights.
With the MG you should deploy on the ground or sandbags or window frame. Then after you have been firing it for a while you have to remember to swap the barrel or it will explode and leave you without a weapon! There is a lot more to this game than I had at first thought. In general the weapon handling feels right. A little like ArmA in that regard, you have to master each weapon you use. I think I will be playing more of the single player tomorrow.

The game does look a lot better, the final patch in the beta improved things greatly. It is not a run and gun game , this actualy feels like a realistic shooter. Run, cover, peek and shoot. It's hard and at times infuriating, but it plays well when you put the teamwork together. Smoke is a necessity to provide cover when crossing open ground and suppression by mg's works well. One of the best games for quite a while, I think BF3 may be hard pressed to beat this for gameplay.

I think BF:3 will be very big and very shiny. I also think I will be playing RO:2 for some long while as an alternative game. Much as I have played Day of Defeat in the past.
