I have just got a simple VR setup. Google Cardboard, it is as the name suggests a cardboard box with some lenses that you can put your phone in. Firstly they really don't like glasses, my guess is contacts or someone with good eyesight would have a much better experience. Does it work? well yes after a fashion. I watched a short movie and thought wow this could be the future of movie watching, only discover that the action was behind me. I had to rewatch it and remember to be looking in the right direction at the right time. Once I got it right it was cool to see the millennium Falcon being chased by some tie fighters as it swooped overhead. The technical side of things worked great. At no point did it look 3D but that might be my eyesight. However the tracking all worked fine. The file I had to download was very large for what was only around a minute of video. It took several times as long to download the file than it took to watch it.
Reading the tech websites VR goggles are going to be the "next big thing" in entertainment. I can say it works but I'm not convinced. It might be the handful of demos I have tried. It might be the limitations of the hardware I have access to.
I can say it was well worth the tenner I paid just to see for myself what it's like. If you have a relatively modern smartphone you should be able to pick up one of the "Google Cardboard" compatible headsets for your self to give them a try.
