DNS is Directory Name Server and is a used by your computer to turning the human readable URL (www.google.com) to the IP address of the server you are trying to connect. Most everyone is using the one provided by their ISP, and for most people that's just fine. OpenDNS is a service providing DNS for free noncommercial use with some added features. I just tried to go to a torrent site and it was blocked. So yea I forgot to set up OpenDNS on my system. I typed in the server address and I can get to my favorite sites again. If you sign up you can make create your own block list. I have mine setup to protect myself and my wife from some of the extremes of the net and known security issues. You could use it to filter a child's internet access from undesirable sites. Companies use the service to block time wasters like Facebook and such. OpenDNS makes their money by charging a fee to commercial use. Protect yourself, protect your family and still unblock what they don't want you to see. www.opendns.com/
